On April 4, 2007, Don Imus described the Rutger's University female basketball team as "nappy-headed hos." There was immediate negative backlash from the media, and from the rapper Snoop Dogg. Snoop Dogg, who has used derogatory slang terms for woman in his lyrics before, felt that the lyrics in his songs are not in the "same league" as Imus' comment. Snoop Dogg said, "(Rappers) are not talking about no collegiate basketball girls who have made it to the next level in education and sports. We're talking about hoes that's in the 'hood that ain't doing shit, that's trying to get a nigga for his money. These are two separate things. First of all, we ain't no old-ass white men that sit up on MSNBC going hard on black girls. We are rappers that have these songs coming from our minds and our souls that are relevant to what we feel. I will not let them muthafuckas say we are in the same league as him. Kick him off the air forever." ( http://jonahwalters.blogspot.com/2007/04/snoop-dogg-on-don-imus.html)
I do agree that what Imus said was completely out of context, and that he should suffer consequences for his actions, on the other hand is Snoop Dogg completely in the right with his comment? Is he in a completely different league then Imus? I thought that this would be a good question to spark some interesting responses for my blog entry.

I personally don't understand why it is okay for Snoop to use misogenistic language, but not Imus. One comment that Snoop made that really made me mad was, "First of all, we ain't no old-ass white men that sit up on MSNBC going hard on black girls." Why does it make a difference that he is a white man saying it, while Snoop is a black man saying it in the lyrics of his songs? To me, it seems just as wrong for someone of the same color to call these women names. I do understand his comment about not calling the basketball players, who were actually making something out of their lives, such names, but who does it help by saying it at all?
i can understand what snoop is saying, though. i mean, i agree it's a bit of a double standard for him to say that he can talk shit about some "hos" but nobody else can, especially an "old-ass white man." but the fact is that when he (or any other rapper, for that matter) raps about hos, they aren't talking about anyone in specific. it's a general statement. what imus did was direct his comment to a specific group of girls. but snoop, like every other rich person, is a hypocrite. that's just the way it goes.
Its never okay for anyone to say these things to anyone. But If you are going to use it, keep it between you and your friends. We all have our opinions about other races, but to deliberately say them and in the process hurt someones feelings is just plain wrong. Imus deserved the backlash that he got. Snoop is wrong too. If its not okay for one to say it, then the other shouldnt either. Snoop is a hypocrite, and needs to change what comes out of his mouth before he starts to critisize others.
Hey, thanks so much for the link! This is really good blog you have going here, and I'll definitely be linking to you from mine. Thanks again!
